CLAN CURLEY LINKS
Athlone Ireland - Curley Central - The heart of Clan Curley, I should try to get there for a visit one day.
Irish Clans - For those who may have thought Clans are exclusive to Scotland, it's not so.
Curley surname and demographic information here.
De
Crioll of Normandy - Another interesting find. Some of the spelling
variations of this surname are very close to what is believed to be
the first known Curley in Ireland. In addition, one bearing this name was found
in close proximity to other surname matches in our lineage.
Historic Document listing three of the surnames found in our genetic group,
where all three names are found together in Normandy in the year
1174 AD. The three latinized names listed here in the document are de Curleio
(Curley), de Tilleio (Tilly or Tilley) and de Grandivalle (Glenville).
The information is found in this section of the document, [1174, 20 Jan.]
(MS.lat.,fo. 14.) or you can Control F to search any of the latinzed
spellings of the names. This could be a major find, having the surnames of
genetically related males together at the same place in Normandy
in 1174AD and having the shared common ancestor for these males appear to be
from a period between 800 - 1100 AD.
Norman de Curly family - (do a control F search on the page for Curly).
Curly was listed on the Battle Abbey Roll, among those that arrived in
England
with William the Conqueror in the year 1066 AD. It is unknown if our Curley family
descends from this Norman de Curly family.
Normandy was founded by the Vikings,
led by the viking
Rollo, around 911AD.
Viking Remains and L1066 - A set of ancient Viking remains was found in
Sweden and tested positive for an snp under L1066, an snp we
share going back
over 3000 years. Here is a
link from a documentary on the pre -Vikings of Oland Sweden, an island just
off the coast.
It actually describes what appears to be some type of massacre
there.
Clans of Ireland
- It would be great if some native Irish Curleys would consider registering Clan
Curley with the Clans of Ireland.
While not a requirement, I believe
it would be more appropriate for native Irish Curleys to take this on.
Turgesius
- Viking Chieftain active in Ireland in the 800s AD. He had a major encampment
on Lough Ree for many years not far from our
Curley homelands.
More information on Turgesius can be found
here.
Vikings on Lough Ree.
Norman Anglo Invasion of Ireland - It's quite possible our Curley originator
arrived as part of this invasion, or that some of the other non Curley but
related males did.
Kerley
- There is a paragraph on this page referencing a Kerley male or family who
supposedly migrated from Denmark to Ireland approximately
1000 to 1100 AD. I
cannot find any other information online regarding this. This time period
matches what we suspect may be the arrival time for
our Curley lineage in
Ireland, based upon DNA testing results.
The Big Tree -
YDNA ancestral tree for those that have taken advanced SNP testing. This shows
lineages below a very old SNP named Z253.
Our specific Curley lineage going back over 3000 years through present
is found
here . As more people test and submit their results, the tree will
branch
out and show the separation points for different family groups.
FTDNA British Isles YCAII 22-23 Project - The Family Tree DNA project for
those males who match the L1066 Curley lineage. This includes
other
surnames that are related to our Curley group but more distantly. I am
also the administrator for this volunteer project.
Family Tree DNA - One of the leading companies in DNA testing. YDNA testing
is for males only and traces the paternal line back thousands of
years. This is
the type of testing used to identify the various Curley lineages and other males
who match the Central Irish Cluster. Family Tree
currently has the largest YDNA
database. They also offer autosomal testing and maternal line mtDNA
testing and ethnicity analysis however
their population database for ethnicity
matching is fairly limited at this time.
Ancestry.com - One of the more popular
DNA testing and genealogical research sites however, they do not offer YDNA
testing. In addition
to ethnicity analysis, their autosomal testing is
useful for finding relations from all ancestors within approximately the past 6
to 8 generations (approx).
